I’ve already discussed situations where you may want to delegate, like structural projects or certifiable experience-related projects, but there are times when you already know you will likely have to delegate some, if not all, of your project. When you have to hire, I recommend finding a professional who is licensed to do the job. Each state should have a website where you can check a business’s license and any subsequent complaints, or check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for other related complaints before you hire them. The license just means that the state is backing them up and there’s some accountability there. If they don’t do the job right, then their license will get a ding and could potentially be revoked. I do my research because most times they will start the job with a deposit, or up front payment and if they don’t then after they’ve finished you’re still on the hook to pay for it, whether it’s done right or not. I try to steer clear of finding people to delegate via personal ads or sites where they’re not required to share their license info. And it’s okay to ask for a portfolio or references if you want proof they’ve done it before. If you don’t mind taking on a project with an unlicensed professional, know that you run the risk of losing your money if you’re not happy with the job. If the job is small then licensing may not matter. It’s still your money but you’ll want to make sure you’re getting what you paid for. Keep a list of those businesses and individuals who did a good job. You may need them again in the future.
And lastly, too many times people get angry at the labor cost for hiring out. Let’s just say this. They have to make a living too. Just because you think doing that job isn’t worth the $75 an hour they’re charging, doesn’t mean they’re robbing you. You have the right to shop around and find a rate that you can afford, but don’t get mad because they’re trying to support their families too.
